• Statistics are important. They let us know how much work needs to be done and how much progress we are making.
• But sometimes we forget that people and their lives are more than just numbers.
• Each individual has a story.
• Each individual is part of a family of more individuals who care about each other.
• It is the families that often work, day and night, to keep their loved one alive and as well as possible.
• Friends, colleagues, employers and, of course, healthcare professionals are there to help, as well.
• In 2019, The Novartis Africa Sickle Cell Disease Program was launched in Ghana to help bridge disease management and outcome disparities between Africa and the rest of the world.
• They understood the importance of listening to people’s individual stories.
• As part of their partnership with Ghana, Novartis worked with Dr. Alex Kumar, a global health physician and photographer.
• Dr. Kumar helped Sickle Cell Warriors and their families to share stories from Ghana and around the globe.
• These brief but thoughtfully captured accounts feel like a labor of love.
• It is with deep gratitude to the Novartis Global Health team, and the extraordinary Dr. Alex Kumar, that we can offer an informative glimpse into the humanity behind the statistics.
